Recipient of the 2020 Noisy Women Commission

We are excited to reveal that Dr Eve Klein is the recipient of our 2020 Noisy Women Commission. Eve is an award-winning composer, mezzo soprano, sound artist and academic. She designs large-scale, immersive art music experiences for festivals. Klein’s music has been described as: “contemporary music at its most relevant – simultaneously inward and outward focused in addressing the challenge of its existence and its capacity to produce something great” (Cyclic Defrost). WATCH HERE. Eve will write a work especially tailored to the talents of the Ensemble Offspring lineup, which will premiere in 2021.

Hatched Academy has three streams: Associate Artist, Open Mic Concert, and Composer Summer School.

We are thrilled to announce that our Hatched Academy Associate Artist for 2020 will be double bass player Will Hansen. Will is a Sydney-based double bassist, improviser and composer. A co-founder of SPIRAL and a member of Ensemble Onsombl (always spelled a different way), Will has performed at venues such as the Sydney Opera House, City Recital Hall
and Sydney Town Hall with groups such as SPIRAL, lost + sound, Ensemble Apex, and the Australian String Quartet.

As our Associate Artist, Will shall perform alongside our core Ensemble Offspring lineup, and have the opportunity to premiere new works.

Will says, “As a new music double bassist, much of my time is spent playing as a soloist, or within my own ensembles with parts written specifically for me. I would love to have the opportunity to play repertoire that exists within a more varied ensemble context; a lot of the time, I am limited in terms of what I can play, unless it fits within my own groups’ needs. I am extremely interested in the music that Ensemble Offspring commissions and plays, and have seen a number of concerts in which I was impressed with the ingenuity and difficulty of the music, and the virtuosity with which it was played – I would love to be a part of such a professional environment, and challenge myself with new repertoire.”

Our Hatched Academy Open Mic concert lineup on 4 July 2020 includes:

Mishi Stern/David Moran – violin and cello. “We will be playing pieces written by young composers based in Europe and Asia (met during my travels and studies here). The next step would be to perform the compositions of young Australians in Frankfurt, and the commission of more pieces. This kind of exchange is something I am interested in further developing, and the Hatched concert would be a great way to get started.”

JACHLO (Jacques Emery/Chloe Kim) – double bass and drum kit respectively. Jachlo is the duo project of Chloe Kim and Jacques Emery, which has been developing over the past three years. It began as an exchange of improvisational and compositional rhythmic ideas during their time studying at the Sydney conservatorium, and developed into a multi-faceted musical collaboration, focusing on improvisation and our own compositions.

Phoebe Bognár – flutist, composer and improviser. Phoebe’s approach to music is sewn with vibrancy and diversity, and explores a diverse range of genres, repertoire and styles.

In the meantime, you can come along to the concerts that form a part of this year’s Composer Summer School on 11 and 13 December at ESCAC, Darlinghurst. More Info
