Meet The Artist: Hilary Kleinig

Veronique on a purple background.

Hilary is the cellist and a driving force behind Adelaide’s premier string group, Zephyr Quartet. Her new work ‘Exquisite Peace’ will feature as part of the quartet’s eclectic program at our 2019 Kontiki Racket Festival.

To say Hilary is an accomplished creative individual is an understatement. As a composer, Hilary has recently worked with Chamber Made Opera and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. She’s performed at OzASIA, WOMADelaide, Soundstream: New Music Festival, Holland Dance Festival, Edinburgh International Arts Festival and the Perth International Arts Festival to name but a few. (Ensemble Offspring will be brushing shoulders with her next month at the Classical:NEXT Showcase in Rotterdam. You can read this great article about us both from Limelight.)

Hilary’s accomplishments extend beyond music. She’s even in the process of developing a smartphone choir app after being awarded an Arts South Australia Fellowship. Her new app aims to bring together artists and audiences by allowing audience members to contribute sound files during performances and installations, forming a ‘digital choir’ of sorts.

At Ensemble Offspring, we were keen to hear about her new work ‘Exquisite Peace’ which will be premiered at Kontiki Racket Festival.

She told us the following:

“Exquisite Peace is a movement from a suite called Ecstatic Moments and tries to capture in sound the essence of a moment of gratitude and stillness where I feel that everything is ok in my life, so perfect at this particular time: the rare, fragile beauty of this crystalline space, knowing that at any second reality, and all that it demands, might come crashing back through and the bittersweet knowledge that I never know when it will happen again.

Let’s just say we’re truly excited to have Hilary and the Zephyr Quartet perform at Kontiki Racket. Their music has been said to “transport you to another time, another dimension.” Who knows where they will take us when they perform in Paddington in June!
