“One of the challenges as a composer is what to do after the premiere of a new work – will it have a life beyond that initial performance or drift into the ether?” Tristan Coelho, Australian composer

The process of commissioning new musical works is a special one. Artists must be given freedom while being provided with the tools and input to realise the strongest and most idiomatic work possible. For some time, we’ve wanted to find new ways to share commissions beyond the concert experience, to reach bigger audiences, not limited by geography, and give listeners a different insight into this music.

Offspring Bites is our new annual recording series, celebrating the creation of new art music in Australia today. It showcases the most exceptional chamber music commissioned for the ensemble by Australian and international composers each year and includes a limited edition CD, digital recording release, and video art created especially for a selection of the recordings.

Offspring Bites 1 (2017) showcases well-known Australian composer Mary Finsterer, alongside the highly talented Tristan Coelho, and Berlin-based Mexican composer and sound artist, Juan Felipe Waller. These three composers are all long-time collaborators of the group and all three works involved extended workshopping sessions and much feedback from our core musicians.“Their works couldn’t be more different, but what they do have in common is an uncompromising aesthetic and an obsession with new and original sound worlds” said Claire Edwardes, Ensemble Offspring Artistic Director.

Video artists Samuel James and Oliver Miller have created original video art in response to the recordings of read/write error by Tristan Coelho, and Detone Retune by Juan Felipe Waller, respectively. The videos provide a different perspective on the works for audiences and will be available for viewing all over the world through the digital platform, Vimeo. Over the years, this will be a continually growing collection of living music. According to Waller, “Sam James’ understanding of my music for his visual take on Detone Retune has been one of the most pleasantly unexpected reactions I have ever experienced of my work…enhancing the musical experience for internet audiences with crisp new qualities.”

From the Composers

“Collaborating with Ensemble Offspring, was both personally and professionally unique and enriching. The level of engagement the group takes their projects to is far-reaching, in doing so enticing both established new music crowds as well as novelty seeking new audiences.

The path of being commissioned, taking part in workshop-oriented rehearsals, alluring performances at the Kontiki Racket Festival, plus a studio recording of my work – as well as an especially created video for it, makes the whole package a blissful experience for any composer.

And video artist, Sam James’ understanding of my music for his visual take on Detone Retune has been one of the most pleasantly unexpected reactions I have ever experienced of my work. I call it a reaction, because in no moment did I give him an explanation of my music, and from the start he was spot on in creating a very organic imagery that complements my ideas in varied layers, adding a sense of suspense, enigma, and predictability, thus enhancing the musical experience for internet audiences with crisp new qualities.”

Juan Felipe Waller, Composer – Detone Retune

“One of the challenges as a composer is what to do after the premiere of a specially-commissioned work – will it have a life beyond that initial performance or drift into the ether? This recording and video project of read/write error has given life to my music beyond its first airing making it accessible to a wider audience. Through such projects, Ensemble Offspring shows their unwavering support for the arts and a commitment to share and make relevant the project of ‘new music’ to the community at large.”
