New music to be seen, heard and felt

Unearthing the sonic possibilities of both the acoustic and the electronic, here are two world and four Australian premieres by six composers from around the globe. This is modern folk music gone insane; a posse of megaphones, bell laden gloves and a mass of melodians. New Radicals is new music to be seen, heard and most importantly, felt.

“Ensemble Offspring were both creators and destroyers in this concert of new works by sonic inventors from around the world.

Oyvind Torvund went to the kitchen cabinet for his timbral paintbox in Neon Forest Space, writing for clarinet, cello and an array of household objects. Despite the potential comic effect of precision milk frothing, this was a deadpan virtuoso performance, especially from clarinettist Jason Noble, playing Norwegian folksongs as if from a parallel universe.

Ekrem Mulayim’s and we chart the topography of a moment dropped percussionist (and Ensemble Offspring co-artistic director) Claire Edwardes into the deep end of new music, not just learning new notes, but a whole new instrument…. It was a miniature masterpiece, and watching the dogged concentration on Edwardes’s face was almost as fascinating as listening to the interplay of tiny bright sounds.

The concert finished with the dazzling invention of Simon Steen-Andersen’s On And Off And To And Fro…The megaphones’ journey from servant to master, which included a hilarious cadenza from megaphonist extraordinaire Lamorna Nightingale, was a real tour de force.” Read more
