December 4, 2021 All day
Hitting the live stage once again with their inimitable verve and vigour, and harnessing the deep vitality of rhythm and pulse, Sydney’s musical mavericks Ensemble Offspring celebrate the very essence of living new music in their 2022 season with captivating performances throughout Sydney, regional NSW and Australia.
Ensemble Offspring’s jam-packed year of live performances kicks off with the intimate and unique series Avant Gardens, once again inviting you into the backyards of their very own musicians’ homes– a truly wholesome and personal new music experience. The iconic annual smorgasbord of musical fun returns to The Great Club (Marrickville) in Sizzle | Beat, celebrating percussion in all its rhythmic and melodic glory.
Another Future presents natural disasters, climate change and pandemics as fuel for artistic expression
and musical interaction: found sounds donated from recent bushfire curated as art, music and film; and features new world premieres by Ensemble Offspring’s 2020 and 2021 Noisy Women composers. Time as Revelator celebrates the power of the beat and the passage of time, and pays tribute to the 100th anniversary of Xenakis’s birth with the contrapuntal sonic blocks of Plekto (braids).
A new collaboration between Ensemble Offspring and Taikoz is brought to life in Coming Together, which presents Frederic Rzewki’s profound settings of texts by Melville – one person’s pain, suffering and fight becoming another’s.
2022 will see Ensemble Offspring continue their long running support of First Nations composers through the collaborative Ngarra-Burria: First Peoples Composers program, and the First Nations Composer in Residence program. Plus, the next generation of new music movers and shakers are nurtured through Hatched Academy, with the annual Summer School at the CORRIDOR project, Hatched Associate Artist Eliza Shephard and Hatched Home Academy fostering regional new music voices.
In these challenging times when we have been apart for so long, what better celebration of life, art and interconnection is there than real, live music-making, binding us together in shared feelings and thoughts?

Ngiyampaa, Yuin, Bandjalang and Gumbangirr man Eric Avery is a violinist, dancer and composer. Working with his family’s custodial songs, he seeks to revive and continue on an age old legacy – continuing the tradition of singing in his tribe and utilising his talents to combine and create an experience of his peoples culture. Eric’s practice explores the deep relationship between Indigenous and non-indigenous forms and narratives through the combination of dance and music.
HATCHED ASSOCIATE ARTIST: ELIZA SHEPHARD
Eliza Shephard is a flautist who has already committed much of her career to commissioning new work with gender equity at the fore. She is known for her ‘fiery’ presence on stage, and capturing the audience’s attention throughout her performances. She writes “I’m most looking forward to the opportunity of collaborating with artists whose music I’ve admired for several years, and to perform and present concerts in thoughtful and engaging ways as EO’s 2022 Associate Artist.”
