Songbirds & Blue Silence

Bellingen Muse Festival

September 24 @ 2:00 pm September 25 @ 11:00 am

Concert 1: Blue Silence – September 24 @ 2:00 pm

Ensemble Offspring’s very own musical mavericks Claire Edwardes (5 octave marimba) and Jason Noble (bass clarinet) join forces with acclaimed American harpist Emily Granger to unearth masterpieces from the depths of living musical imagination for their three monolithic instruments. Originally premiered in their live-streamed concert series Offspring For All (now free to view online), Blue Silence hits the live stage in 2022 to share this unique combination of unusual instruments and healing music from around the globe.

Granger’s harp features in a stunning solo penned by her partner and local legend Tristan Coelho, complemented by rousing chamber works from Nathan Daughtrey (USA), Caleb Burhans (USA) and Gunnar Andreas Kristinsson (Iceland). A timely trio arrangement of the reflective Blue Silence by Australian treasure Elena Kats-Chernin is complemented by Gerard Brophy’s new work Just outside Van… for bass clarinet and marimba – come on a journey to Turkey’s ancient east coast in this virtuosic duo.

Concert 2: Songbirds – September 25 @ 10:00 am

As birdsong drifts in on the summer breeze, an intimate trio of flute, clarinet and percussion take inspiration from the weird and wonderful sounds of the Australian bush in Songbirds. Capturing the calls and songs of Australian birds in a plethora of new works by Australian composers, Songbirds is a journey into the sounds of nature with the magical calls of pied butcherbirds of the red centre, virtuosic avian displays and indigenous musical perspectives on these beguiling creatures of the sky.

Don’t miss this intimate musical experience with three of Australia’s most versatile and captivating chamber musicians.
