GAME ON: Ensemble Offspring, Julian Day + Georgina Oakes

July 19, 2018 | 7:00pm

Featuring at Backstage in Sydney and MUMA in Melbourne, Game On brings together musical mavericks Julian Day and Ensemble Offspring to explore performance practises derived from game theory and sport. Opening the Ensemble Offspring show will be their Hatched Academy Associate Artist, clarinettist Georgina Oakes.

Using everyday objects such as coins, planks of wood and bottles to create sound, they will establish modes of relating to each other through competitive physical challenges and cooperative strategies. Calling all spectators to play host to the musical winners and losers!

“It’s about cooperation, interaction, checks and balances, tension and release … both musical and social” John Zorn

“Live performance thrives on simple innovations like these. Live music isn’t just sound — it’s sight as well, and why not smell? Eat your heart out, Wagner — creating gesamtkunstwerk needn’t be so grandiose. It can be as simple and as intimate as a performer reaching out to hand you an incense stick.”

“This is best approached as a sort of multisensory salon… Julian Day’s Game On created some highly entertaining situations for performer and audience alike.”

“replete with ideas, feelings, and sensory experiences — and most importantly, it was fun.”
