2014 marks the inaugural year of Hatched—a unique opportunity for one composer and one performer to work closely with Ensemble Offspring’s Artistic Directors and musicians. Two outstanding candidates were chosen from a very competitive round of applicants and these are Sydney based composer (and jazz saxophonist) Jeremy Rose and Callum G’Froerer—a genre hopping trumpeter hailing from Perth and based in Melbourne.
Callum features as soloist and chamber musician in this showcase concert of premieres, featuring Matthias Pintscher’s tactile, introspective solo requiem pushing the trumpet from the edge of tonelessness to its maximum force, Stockhausen’s intriguing and colourful trio QUITT and two new works from Cor Fuhler. Two world premieres by Jeremy Rose include a duo for trumpet and multi-textured percussion accompaniment and an extended work for the full quartet Border Control, a musical response to the ongoing human rights dramas in Australia.
Join Ensemble Offspring and our hatchlings at the Sydney Conservatorium in October for a stunning boundary-prodding program of firsts for Sydney.
“The marketing material is all fluffy chicks and comfy nests, but don’t be fooled. Intrepid new music group Ensemble Offspring may be in the nurturing business but the fledglings in this, the first of an on-going mentoring scheme, appropriately monikered ‘Hatched’, are seriously talented youngsters.”
Clive Paget, Limelight
“…G’Froerer and Rose were afforded the opportunity to demonstrate their frankly astonishing ensemble and musicianship skills, which have been honed and refined under the tutelage of this world-class ensemble.”
