A soundtrack by Perth composer Chris Tonkin, performed live by Ensemble Offspring in a cinema near you. Released in 1922, this cult silent era film was an unauthorised adaptation of ‘Dracula’. Stokes heirs sued the makers and ruled all copies be destroyed – however a few survived and the film is now considered a masterpiece of 20th Century cinema.
You can read an interview with Kultur magazine about the event here.
“It was an absolute pleasure to listen to your interpretation of this film, in fact in my view it was the best KinoKonzert tour we’ve had so far. Chris Tonkin’s composition was sublime, detailed and respectful of its own role (i.e. being a soundtrack albeit a live one); Claire, Jason and Freya’s virtuosity and skill in combination with improvisational abilities let the composition shine and beautifully brought home the underlying atmospheres of the scenes with wonderful subtlety and an elegantly understated yet distinct tone and feel. As a group the ensemble of four managed to merge the electronic and analogue sources with apparent ease, creating a coherent, creative and new vision to accompany this well-known film.”Jochen Gutsche, Goethe Institute (Sydney)
