The concept of the open-form has long been a fascination for Ensemble Offspring. The works in our Open Music program are not fixed in the imagination of the composer, but fluid objects rendered afresh with every performance. Hockey by the radical avant-jazz artist John Zorn is one of his infamous game pieces. Governed by rules akin to a sporting game, Hockey is an improvising environment that forces performers into an agile and unexpected interplay of sonic actions. In Three2, the controversial composer of chance, John Cage, provides us with an invitation to pause, listen and find beauty in unexpected sounds and their coincidental interactions. From Ensemble Offspring’s Artistic Director Damien Ricketson we hear an instrumental movement from Fractured Again that features a warped rewriting of Mozart while Larry Polansky’s Ensembles of Note sets up a funky ostinato that accumulates notes as it goes. Also on the program is Tom Johnson’s humourous rendering of maths as sound in Eggs and Baskets and Edgard Varèse’s seminal work for flute Density 25.1.
