Open Music 2009

June 28, 2009 @ 1:30 pm

Ensemble Offspring contests the very definition of the musical work in a ongoing series of programs celebrating the ‘open’ work. From wild improvisation games to musical scores that look more like modern artworks, Open Music challenges the idea that the musical work is a fixed entity in the imagination of the composer but rather a inspired call to action for all with an open mind and a sense of imagination to recreate again and again. So … engage your ears and open your mind, you won’t hear this twice.

In 2009 we bring to Blacktown, an eclectic selection of some of our favourites from the genre. Hockey by the radical avant-jazz artist John Zorn is one of his infamous game pieces. Governed by rules akin to a sporting game, Hockey is an improvising environment that forces performers into an agile and unexpected interplay of sonic actions.

In Three2, the controversial composer of chance, John Cage, provides us with an invitation to pause, listen and find beauty in unexpected sound-sources and their coincidental interactions. Scored for “any means of producing sound”, a version of the work was famously recorded by the rock band Sonic Youth on their Goodbye Twentieth Century album.

Same Steps, by Ensemble Offspring’s Artistic Director Damien Ricketson, creates sound out of notation more commonly associated with choreography while Philip Glass’s open-scored Music in Fifths envelops the audience in a hypnotic and relentless whirl of notes.

Also on the program is a clapping game by Steve Reich with audience involvement and lots of chatting in between pieces to make, what can often be confronting, an accessible and memorable experience for all!
