From the set of Play School to the main stage at Sydney Opera House, Claire Edwardes is the sorceress of percussion. Known for her genre-spanning solo concerts, broad spectrum of collaborations and advocacy for gender equity in music, her breadth of experience and energy is astonishing.
Rhythms of Change will see her address the disparity in the representation of women in classical music, with a specific focus on solo percussion music. Spurred by a realisation that her past repertoires contained pieces mostly written by men, Edwardes commissioned seven of her favourite female-identifying Australian composers to write new works for solo mallet percussion.
This initiative ensures that the next opus of Australian percussion music will be more fairly represented by women, in works that exude inventive percussive textures and an endless variety of melodic material.
