Whirlwind of Time

June 24, 2006 @ 8:00 pm

Whirlwind of Time takes its name from Gérard Grisey’s monumental chamber-work Vortex Temporum. Grisey is one of the father figures of “spectral” music, a movement that began in the 1970s in Paris and is emerging today as one of the most influential directions in contemporary classical composition. The spectral approach to composition uses the acoustic properties of sound itself as a model to generate musical structures and rich microtonal sonorities.

Grisey’s Vortex Temporum is accompanied by works from Christopher Tonkin and Damien Ricketson, two younger Australian composers that share some connection with the spectral movement. Christopher Tonkin’s In, for bass drum and live electronics was written while at the acoustic research institute IRCAM in Paris and will receive its Australian premiere by percussionist Claire Edwardes.

Whirlwind of Time is presented in association with the New Music Network.
