Hatched Academy

Established in 2014, Hatched Academy supports outstanding young performers and composers to become leaders of innovative new music in Australia. This national program encompasses three annual streams: the Hatched Composer Intensive selects four composers to develop a new work for Ensemble Offspring; the Hatched Associate Artist position offers career opportunities and mentorship to one instrumentalist; and the Hatched Mentorship Program provides guidance to ten participants through virtual sessions. In 2024, esteemed composer Brett Dean remains onboard as our faithful Hatched Academy Ambassador, while clarinettist Jason Noble assumes the new role of Hatched Academy Director.

  • Hatched Composer Intensive

    The Hatched Composer Intensive is an annual opportunity for four emerging composers from around Australia. Selected composers create a new chamber work for Ensemble Offspring, supported by their chosen composition mentors and the musicians through online check ins, performer presentations and industry sessions. The highlight of the program is an intensive week of workshops with the ensemble and a lead composition mentor, culminating in the Hatched Composer Showcase, a professionally documented public performance premiering the composers’ new works. New in 2024, one Composer Intensive participant will be selected to receive an additional paid commission for a future Ensemble Offspring season.

  • Hatched Associate Artist

    Each year, one elite Australian instrumentalist who demonstrates a passion for new chamber music is selected to join Ensemble Offspring as our Associate Artist. This is a flexible mentorship where the selected artist devises the best use of Ensemble Offspring’s expertise and resources in association with the Artistic Director and Hatched Academy Director to kick start a successful performance career specialising in living new music. This may include creative and business mentorship as well as chamber performance opportunities with EO.

    Throughout the year the selected artist is also assisted to commission, develop, premier and professionally video document a new solo or chamber work by a composer of their choosing. The new work is funded by Ensemble Offspring and the artist is guided throughout the process, drawing from our extensive experience as the most prolific commissioners of new Australian music.

  • Hatched Mentorship Program

    The Hatched Mentorship Program is a chance for emerging musicians of all practices to learn from Ensemble Offspring’s instrumentalists and artistic collaborators. A shorter and more casual mentorship compared to the Associate Artist and Composer Intensive, the Mentorship Program provides two one-on-one sessions (in person or online) with the participant’s chosen mentor. Participants can use these sessions in any way they deem beneficial to their artistic practice; this may include instrumental, composition or conducting lessons, or advice on career paths and project funding.

    The Hatched Mentorship Program occurs during July each year and is open to participants from the age of 16. We encourage those considering the Composer Intensive for the first time to also apply for this program that supports a wide range of experience levels. As the sessions can be held online, regional artists or artists with a disability are encouraged to apply.
