2024 Resident Artists
We’re extremely excited to announce our 2024 resident artists! Fronting the various streams of our industry-leading development programs are the positions of First Nations Composer in Residence, Hatched Associate Artist and – for the final year – Noisy Women Commission recipient.
Joining the list of outstanding young Australian performers to hold the position, saxophonist Alice Morgan is the 2024 Hatched Associate Artist. As well as performing alongside the ensemble in two major programs – Psychedelic Frenzy and Future Classics – Alice will also commission and premiere a new work for solo saxophone by in-demand composer Holly Harrison.
2023 First Nations Composer in Residence James Henry will retain his position into 2024 as the program evolves into a biennial residency, and he continues to develop his multi-movement work Dreamscapes. You can watch and listen to one movement from this work (titled Big Swell), which we premiered in May 2023. You can hear more of James’ music at our NAIDOC Week Celebration.
Finally, bringing the ensemble’s annual Noisy Women Commission to a close is Paris-based Australian composer Kirsten Milenko. A Hatched alumni herself, Kirsten’s new work will be premiered at Future Classics alongside new works from the 2024 Hatched Composer Intensive cohort.
With the annual Noisy Women commission having paved the way for broader positive changes towards gender equality in the Australian art music industry, we are now shifting our approach by ensuring at least 50% of all commissions go to female-identifying composers. The purpose of this is to normalise the gender equality that exists in our commissioned repertoire.
